The Role of the Athletic Trainer in CTE Education and Risk Reduction

Athletic trainers are the primary health care professionals on the ground overseeing the health of athletes, and those of us who played sports – or care about someone who has – owe them a great debt of gratitude.
That’s why on July 30, 2026, we collaborated with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association for a special webinar titled CTE: The Role of the Athletic Trainer in Education and Risk Reduction.
Concussion & CTE Foundation co-founders Dr. Robert Cantu and Dr. Chris Nowinski, alongside our advisor Dr. Dan Daneshvar, chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School, presented.
By equipping athletic trainers with the latest research on CTE and evidence on risk reduction, we hope they can lead culture change on CTE just like they did with concussions. We’re excited for the opportunity to institutionalize CTE prevention protocols, bringing them directly into schools across the country.
In consultation with CTE experts at the Boston University CTE Center & Harvard Medical School, we also created the first CTE fact sheets, co-branded with NATA, for athletes, parents, and coaches. You can check out a preview and download them all below.
