A former player’s experience
with the Harvard Alumni HelpLine
“I was noticing some changes in my speech and memory, and as my concern grew, I reached out to the Concussion & CTE Foundation HelpLine. I received immediate support and guidance, and they helped me find a provider who took my symptoms seriously. Honestly, it was reassuring just to have someone in my corner.
After seeing the doctor, the neurological symptoms appear to be a result of sleep apnea, a common affliction for former football players due to excess neck tissue (both muscle and fat) that can obstruct the airway. I’m beginning treatment now and am hopeful that the symptoms are both treatable and reversible.
CTE research deserves more of our attention, and I will continue to support the mission of the Concussion & CTE Foundation. I absolutely encourage anyone with lingering questions to reach out to the HelpLine, as they were instrumental in getting to the bottom of my concerns, and I owe them a sincere debt of gratitude.”
