{"id":25971,"date":"2022-07-26T11:39:40","date_gmt":"2022-07-26T11:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test11.f5test.in.ua\/blog-press\/5-faq-that-dont-challenge-cte-causation\/"},"modified":"2022-07-26T11:39:40","modified_gmt":"2022-07-26T11:39:40","slug":"5-faq-that-dont-challenge-cte-causation","status":"publish","type":"blog-press","link":"https:\/\/concussionandcte.org\/en-ca\/news\/blog\/5-faq-that-dont-challenge-cte-causation\/","title":{"rendered":"5 FAQ that don\u2019t challenge CTE causation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Adam Finkel, ScD &amp; Chris Nowinski, PhD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The five questions below about repetitive head impacts (RHI) and CTE are based on natural observations that are frequently made by sports organizations, former athletes, and even some physicians.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, they have been inappropriately used by doctors associated with sports leagues, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/frontline\/documentary\/league-of-denial\/transcript\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL advisors<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsneuropsychologysociety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Chronic-Traumatic-Encephalopathy-8.2017-new-logo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL- and NHL-sponsored neuropsychologists<\/a>, to trivialize CTE or to attempt to refute that RHI causes CTE, and that CTE causes dementia.<\/p>\n<p>We wrote this blog to clear up any confusion and to accompany our recent publication on CTE causation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fneur.2022.938163\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Applying the Bradford Hill Criteria for Causation to Repetitive Head Impacts and CTE.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note these five questions do not provide actual counterevidence, only anecdote. There are many causes of lung cancer other than cigarette smoking. At some point, CTE has been set in motion, even though the victim may not have the diagnostic lesion for years, or symptoms for decades.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 11px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"line-height: 107%;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: black;\" data-darkreader-inline-color=\"\">Second, the science thus far says, similar to smoking and lung cancer, that the more exposure to RHI, the more likely you are to develop CTE,\u00a0<i>regardless of<\/i> <i>when that RHI occurred<\/i>.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Sometimes analogy can be helpful. Everyone has known for decades that smoking causes lung cancer. Imagine if someone told you<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmoking doesn\u2019t cause lung cancer, because\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard of someone who smoked heavily and didn\u2019t get lung cancer\u2026<br \/>\nI heard of someone who got lung cancer but never smoked\u2026<\/p>\n<p>or<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLung cancer doesn\u2019t cause serious symptoms, because\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard of someone whose lung cancer was mild\u2026<br \/>\nI heard of someone who was short of breath but didn\u2019t have lung cancer&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Or<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s OK for that child to smoke two packs-a-day because\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I heard they plan to stop by age 18.<\/p>\n<p>Would any of these statements change your mind about whether cigarette smoking causes lung cancer? Of course not. It\u2019s not surprising to hear these statements from some physicians, neuropsychologists, or researchers if they don\u2019t have training in public health.
